How far do walkie-talkies really reach?
About a quarter mile to two and a half miles, not the 35 or 36 on the box. Independent testers measured every radio below far short of its claim once trees, hills or houses got in the way. With a clear line of sight from high ground, good radios reach about five miles.

Box range vs measured range
Every independent test we found
| Radio | Where they tested | Range | Tester, in their words |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midland GXT1000VP4 | trees and hills | under 1 mi | OutdoorGearLab: "had a much shorter range and is best for close-proximity use under 1 mile" |
| Retevis RT22 (4-pack) | heavy trees | about 0.5 mi | OutdoorGearLab: "Transmissions with the Retevis RT22 were static-laden within about a half mile, especially with trees in between." |
| Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio (2 pack) | forested rolling hills | 2.2–2.6 mi | OutdoorGearLab: "boasted ranges of 2.2 to 2.6 miles in forested rolling hills" |
| Motorola Talkabout T605 H2O (2-pack) | rocks and trees | just over 1 mi | OutdoorGearLab: "from six miles down to just over one." |
| Rocky Talkie Expedition 5 Watt Radio (2 pack) | hilly neighborhood with houses | about 0.6 mi | Outdoor Life: "the max range was around .6 miles" |
| MOICO 22-Channel FRS (2-pack) | hilly neighborhood with houses | about 0.3 mi | Outdoor Life: "a good range of about .3 miles with obstructions" |
| DEWALT DXFRS800 | trees, mixed terrain | 0.5–2 mi | Outdoor Empire: "reliable communication distance varied between 0.5 miles to 2 miles, depending on the terrain and level of tree cover" |
| Midland GXT67 PRO | high ground, clear line of sight | about 5 mi | OVR Magazine: "From elevated positions with unobstructed line of sight, we achieved approximately five miles with very good audio clarity." |

What actually adds range
- Height. The farthest result here came from high ground: OVR Magazine: "From elevated positions with unobstructed line of sight, we achieved approximately five miles with very good audio clarity."
- Fewer obstacles. Trees and hills cut range the most. OutdoorGearLab: "from six miles down to just over one."
- A car radio or repeater. GMRS car radios can use up to 50 watts and an outside antenna. See car radios.
- Power, a little. FRS handhelds max out at 2 watts and GMRS handhelds at 5. GMRS vs FRS.
Questions people ask
How far do walkie-talkies really reach?
Through trees, hills or houses, about a quarter mile to two and a half miles. Testers measured 0.3 mile for a $18 FRS pair and 0.6 mile for a $390 GMRS pair in the same hilly neighborhood.
Why does the box say 36 miles?
Box numbers come from ideal tests, like mountaintop to mountaintop with nothing in between. Retevis says it plainly: “most FRS radios are usually within 0.5-2 miles”.
What makes the biggest difference?
Height and a clear line between the radios. Stand on high ground, hold the radio up, and get away from buildings and trees. Power helps less than height.
