Is this walkie-talkie really license-free?

Most are, but not the best seller. Every walkie-talkie sold in the US needs an FCC approval for a specific radio service. We looked up the approval behind the 30 best-selling listings on Amazon. 14 are license-free FRS radios and 10 need a $35 GMRS license. The top seller, sold in 3 listings, is a business radio that isn't approved for license-free use at all.

The best seller is a business radio

pxton's PX-888S sells more than any other walkie-talkie on Amazon. Its own listing says "Certified under FCC Part 90. This device shall be operated only within authorized frequency bands." The FCC record agrees: its only approval is Part 90, the rules for licensed business radio, on 400 to 470 MHz. FCC ID 2AX68PX-888S.

That matters because FCC rules let you use only a radio approved for the service you're using. "no person shall operate a transmitter in any Personal Radio Service unless it is a certified transmitter" 47 CFR 95.335 And: "Use of a transmitter that is not FCC-certified voids the user's authority to operate that station." 47 CFR 95.335

Plenty of reviews call these license-free. They aren't. If you want a radio anyone in the family can use without a license, buy one approved for FRS, like the picks below.

FCC records are read from fccid.io, a mirror of the FCC's equipment authorization database. When a seller doesn't print the FCC ID, we found the grant by model name. We don't link to business radios or toys, since we don't recommend them.

Check any radio yourself

  1. Find the FCC ID. It's on a label under the battery, in the manual, or in the listing. It looks like 2AAR8RETEVISRT22.
  2. Look it up.
    Look it up
  3. Read the rule part. 95B means FRS (license-free). 95E means GMRS (license needed). 90 means business radio (license needed). 97 means ham (license and exam needed). 15 means a low-power device, like a Wi-Fi toy, not a radio service. 95A is general Part 95 paperwork and doesn't change the answer).
